Fiber can be broken into two broad categories: soluble and insoluble fiber.
Soluble fiber (found in beans, peas, and oats) -- and the inulin found in SmartyPants Fiber products -- acts as a prebiotic that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut.* It also supports digestive health and your immune system.*
Insoluble fiber (found in whole wheat, bran, and seeds) keeps the digestive tract running smoothly and regularly. For some people, insoluble fiber (like gluten or raw veggies), can be harder to digest and cause discomfort after being eaten.
While there are some foods that contain both soluble and insoluble fiber together, like prunes, dried plums, citrus fruits, and brussels sprouts, there are many combinations of foods that offer both soluble and insoluble fiber like rice and black beans, sprouted grain toast with avocado and an egg or a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts.
